Substance use disorder can leave individuals feeling hopeless and alone. However, there is always a way out, and you can find trained professionals who are willing to help you at Bright Futures. Besides seeking professional help, we believe that the key to a successful recovery is taking part in sober activities that can be fun and healing. During our programs we help patients overcome their addiction, and also teach them that sobriety can be fun. For this reason we want to discuss the importance of finding joy in activities that you can do alone. Additionally, we are going to examine the benefits of taking part in group sessions during your therapy, and how to grow stronger by relying on others.

The Importance of Having Sober Fun

Every person’s struggle with addiction is a unique experience. People can start abusing substances out of various reasons. Individuals who are dissatisfied with their lives or seeking a quick thrill often succumb to addiction. We make it a priority to show individuals that there are many sober activities that can be fun and healing. Being creative during recovery can actually help patients in numerous ways.

Some individuals have a hard time confronting their fears and anxieties. Fun activities can be used as a way for patients to open up at their own pace. Art can be an introspective experience which can help patients explore their emotions and come to terms with what they are feeling. Being honest with yourself is necessary if you want to achieve long term sobriety. Honestly and self exploration don’t need to be humorless and dour experiences. You can learn a lot about yourself by having fun and learning new skills. Growth and learning through play can be incredibly empowering, and that’s why we encourage patients to have fun during rehab.

On the other hand, some individuals who are dealing with substance use disorder may also be struggling with trauma. There are many traumatic experiences which can leave people in a state of emotional shock. This can lead individuals to seek escape in substance abuse. Unfortunately, avoiding your feelings is counterproductive to your recovery. In these situations trauma therapy is required, through which patients will learn healthy coping mechanisms to deal with real life stressors. An important part of dealing with trauma is learning to have fun. Once you begin to enjoy a sober lifestyle, your chances for recovery will significantly improve.

The Types of Therapy Used to Help You Become Sober at Bright Futures

Individuals who are suffering from substance use disorder need to begin their journey to recovery with detoxification. Once that process is completed, the Inpatient therapy program can begin. Patients can take part is various programs which are custom tailored to their needs. During this time, patients stay in our luxurious facility in Boynton Bay. Their recovery is guided by a team of highly trained clinicians and medical staff. We implement a wide array of therapeutic techniques which are meant to help patients overcome their addiction, and to show them how fun sobriety can be. During inpatient therapy you will learn necessary coping skills and develop the self esteem required to partake in group activities.

After finishing your inpatient program, you can move to outpatient therapy. With the skills you have learned, you can now begin your integration back into society. Outpatient therapy includes taking part in group sessions, as well as individual sessions with a therapist which is conducted on a weekly basis. Patients are encouraged to seek employment and put the social skills they have learned in therapy to the test. You will get to recover at your own pace while returning to a healthy, everyday life. However, sobriety is a lifelong goal, and by learning to have fun and enjoy sober activities – you can continue to maintain your healthy habits even after you finish your outpatient therapy.

Continuing to Care for Yourself

Putting your health and overall wellbeing in first place isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Thankfully, our therapists can work with you to develop an aftercare program that can help you stay on track. Aftercare is intended to assist you in maintaining your sobriety and preventing relapse. The sober activities you have explored during your therapy can come in handy here.

One of the main goals of the sober activities that can be fun and healing is to help you develop a routine in which you feel safe and calm. Whenever you are facing stress and when you have trouble coping, you can always return to your positive routine. Go back to the activities which you found fun and use them to meditate and recover. If you had fun doing yoga in your therapy, then you can continue practicing it even outside of rehab. Alternatively, you can use the art skills you’ve learned, and then start drawing or painting when you are feeling stressed out. A fun routine can be incredibly relaxing, and doing something you know you will enjoy is always comforting.

Of course, you don’t have to face those stressful situations alone. A large part of aftercare consists of forming strong and supportive relationships. If you build a support network, you will always have someone you can count on to help you get through the tough times. For this reason a large portion of our group therapy is also focused on sober activities with other people.

Achieve Long Term Sobriety

Unfortunately, addiction is a type of disease that doesn’t have an instantaneous cure. Instead, our goal is to help you to achieve lifelong sobriety. However, that is something you need to work hard towards. Life is full of challenges and hardships, and sobriety needs to be maintained. Ultimately, if you are determined, we can help you find fulfillment and happiness in a sober lifestyle.

Substance use disorder is classified as a mental illness. Persons who are abusing can form both a mental and physical addiction. Therefore, in order to treat patients, we need to care for the body and the mind. Our Holistic therapy is based on modern research and is carried out by master level clinicians. We believe that only through proper diet and exercise, coupled with therapeutic activities, can you restore the natural balance required for a full recovery.

Although participating in physical therapy isn’t required, we highly encourage our patients to engage in physical activities. Physical therapy is intended to help you build up your body back into a healthy state. Exercise can be fun and it can also positively affect your brain chemistry. When you exercise, your brain releases endorphins; you rid yourself of stress and boost your mood.

We also have weekly nutrition and life skills groups. Here you’ll learn how to prepare balanced meals which will fuel your body and prepare you for an active lifestyle. Our registered dietician will work with you to create an individualized nutritional plan. Once you start consuming enough nutrients and proteins you will feel a significant improvement to your energy level. Not only will you be in a better mood, but you will also have the strength to go out and have fun.

Decide to Have Fun in Therapy with Sober Activities

It’s incredible how helpful a positive mindset can be for your successful recovery. Patients who want to get better and believe they can achieve sobriety generally have a much easier journey to recovery. The same can be said about having fun. We can provide you with a large number of activities and offer to teach you new, useful skills. However, it’s entirely up to you to use that opportunity and make the most of your therapy in Bright Futures. We will work with you to make an individualized treatment plan, and offer you support and guidance.

You can look forward to a new lifestyle filled with sober activities that can be fun and healing. Actually, it can be beneficial to adopt a positive mindset even before you enter rehab. Talk to your loved ones and make plans for fun activities which you can do together after you complete rehab. Use this as motivation in situations when you are feeling down. Remind yourself of all the things you have to look forward to, as well as all the fun activities you can share with loved ones. Once you realize that sobriety is fun, you will see that there is nothing preventing you from taking part in that kind of lifestyle.

Learn From the Experience of Others

Some people believe that, in order to properly ‘learn their lesson,’ they need to make a mistake themselves. Unfortunately, substance use disorder is a very dangerous disease which can quickly spiral out of control. Addiction definitely won’t give you too many opportunities to make mistakes. The consequences of such mistakes can be life threatening and can have serious repercussions on your health. If you are struggling with addiction, we urge you to contact us and get help immediately.

That being said, you can actually learn a lot from the experience of other people who are going through a struggle that is similar to yours. Group therapy sessions have an important place in our treatment programs. All group sessions are led by qualified experts, and you’ll be able to participate in discussions and interact with others. We have a 12 step recovery program, and you will be paired with a sponsor who can offer you support and advice.

The Stages of Addiction and Healing

Just as patients go through various stages of clinical addiction treatment, so too must they go through a personal journey and learn to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. In order to reach sobriety, the most important decision you will need to make is to ask for help. The first steps are always the hardest, and we realize that asking for help can be extremely difficult. Unfortunately, the road ahead is going to be long and filled with doubts. But trust us, there is hope and you can get better.

Once you go through your initial detox and overcome the withdrawal symptoms there is still a lot of work that needs to be done:

  • Come to terms with yourself. Even noticing the signs that it’s time to get help is a huge step towards recovery. However, you will also need to deal with your feelings of guilt and shame and start to forgive yourself.
  • Become comfortable alone with your own thoughts. Patients in recovery often have self esteem issues. Thankfully, we can help you build a better image of yourself.
  • Form bonds with others. If you want to be a productive member of society, you will need to rely on other people. For this reason we include group sessions in our therapy. However, you can also make a lot of progress by taking part in fun activities. There you can learn to depend on others, and experience the joys of helping them and collaborating.
