Have you ever had a hot shot of heroin in a needle ready to inject and end your pain once and for all? Have you ever lost your loved ones—your family members, the love of your life, your career, because of the pull of a needle? You are not alone—we have chronicled one man’s story from a desolate and seemingly hopeless heroin junkie to an up and coming successful business man. Never give up on your dreams, no matter how bad the situation seems.
I grew up in the middle-class suburbs of New Jersey. Came from a good family, no history of any addict in my family, my older siblings were investment bankers and hotel managers…and then there was me. I always excelled in academics and was very athletic as part of the basketball team in high school. But something happened to me in that summer between high school and college—something changed. I tried lady heroin and fell in love with her at the first sight. My so called best friend stuck the needle in my arm, and the overwhelming euphoria cannot be described into written language. It was amazing. Unfortunately, the happy story ends there. Everything afterward includes multiple felony arrests for possession, jails, institutions, and death which I was already planning to be a grant event of massive overdose proportions.
THERE IS NO BRIGHT FUTURE FOR A HEROIN ADDICT
I thought I would do my family a favor by not having me around—no more worry, no more heartache, no more sleepless nights waiting for the phone call to tell you that your son has been arrested yet again. I just felt so hopeless, like heroin would be my only achievement in life, but boy was I wrong. A family intervention forced me into treatment where I learned the ropes and the basics about twelve step programs and men’s recovery, but the first day I left the men’s addiction program, I was using again…because I was not ready.
NEVER LOSE HOPE IN THE STRENGTH OF PERSEVERANCE
The second time, something different happened. I went to a place called Bright Futures Treatment Center. They have a small, friendly, and family atmosphere and the people there genuinely seemed to care whether I lived or died. I was not labeled a hopeless addict, but rather a beacon of inspiration for others whose experiences were not as gruesome as mine. Three years later, and I have nothing but fond and happy memories about my stay at this men’s recovery program. I’ve made sober connections and a network of friends during my stay that I still talk to at least once a week. I stayed the full thirty days and enjoyed the unique holistic approach to addiction treatment that ties in group therapy and individual counseling for a complete and comprehensive approach.
NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS
I still have friends out there using and dying, but I cannot force them to make the decision to change, that has to be done from within, not for anyone else but for yourself. Yes, there are bumps on the road to recovery, but the lifestyle of robbing, cheating, and stealing for the next high no longer appeals to me. Today, I own a start-up internet marketing business and I am a young up and coming entrepreneur. There are challenges with owning your own business including deadlines and a lot of hard work, but I would not trade it for anything. I know an eight ball of cocaine would make me a lot more productive, but today I play the tape out—what are the decisions and consequences of my actions? Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a college student or a single father on welfare, Bright Futures and their men’s addiction treatment plan is personalized to fit the needs of every individual. I will always be an addict, but now I am armed with the tools, knowledge, and coping skills to deal with my substance abuse. What do you have to lose? Except everything to gain.
