Bright Futures Treatment Center provides a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Boynton Beach, South Florida, for adults who need intensive addiction treatment without 24-hour inpatient hospitalization. Clients participate in several hours of structured daytime care multiple days per week, with individual and group therapy, medical and mental health support when appropriate, and access to supportive recovery housing. Treatment length is individualized, and PHP can be extended when additional time at this level of care is clinically beneficial.
There is a point in recovery when a few outpatient sessions each week may not provide enough structure, but 24-hour inpatient hospitalization is no longer necessary or appropriate. PHP fills that space by keeping treatment intensive while allowing clients to begin rebuilding independence outside clinical hours. Bright Futures Treatment Center‘s program in Boynton Beach combines structured daytime care with individualized treatment, access to a multidisciplinary clinical team and supportive recovery housing when needed. Rather than moving clients through care according to a fixed calendar, we adjust treatment around progress, stability and the level of support each person continues to need.
What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program at Bright Futures?
A Partial Hospitalization Program provides intensive addiction treatment during the day without requiring clients to remain in a hospital or clinical facility overnight. Clients in our PHP spend several hours in structured treatment multiple days per week at our Boynton Beach facility. Care can include individual and group therapy, medical and medication support when appropriate, treatment for co-occurring mental health concerns, case management, and recovery planning. After scheduled treatment ends for the day, clients return to their approved living environment or, when appropriate, to supportive recovery housing.
Who May Benefit From PHP?
The decision to enter PHP is based less on a particular substance or diagnosis than on how much clinical structure a person currently needs. Someone may benefit from PHP when they are medically stable enough to remain outside 24-hour inpatient care but still need frequent therapy, accountability, and clinical support. It can also serve as a transition from a higher level of care for clients who are not yet ready for the greater independence of IOP or standard outpatient treatment.
During assessment, we consider substance use, physical and mental health, previous treatment, the recovery environment, and other factors that may affect stability. PHP can support people recovering from alcohol or drug addiction as well as clients who need integrated care for co-occurring mental health conditions.
PHP is not medical detox. Some clients are able to begin PHP directly, while others may need detoxification or another form of medical stabilization first. Our admissions team helps determine the appropriate starting point rather than expecting clients to know which level of care they need before reaching out.
What Treatment Looks Like During PHP
Treatment days bring together several parts of recovery rather than relying on one therapy or approach. Each client works with a primary therapist who helps guide treatment goals, monitor progress, and identify where additional support may be needed.
Our average 1:6 client-to-therapist ratio allows for individual attention alongside participation in the wider therapeutic community. Individual sessions can focus on triggers, coping strategies, relapse risks, mental health concerns and personal recovery goals, while group therapy gives clients opportunities to develop practical skills, work through common challenges and learn alongside others in treatment.
Care is supported by a professional team with experience across different stages of addiction treatment. Medical Director Dr. Jeffrey Bishop is board-certified in Family Medicine and holds certification in Addiction Medicine. Kathleen Simervil, PA, brings experience in psychiatric and addiction medicine across detox, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient settings. They work alongside mental health clinicians, group facilitators, case managers and recovery support staff, allowing treatment to respond to medical, psychological and practical recovery needs within one coordinated plan.
Where Do Clients Stay During PHP?
PHP refers to the level of clinical care, not where a client lives. Treatment takes place at our Boynton Beach clinical facility during the day, and clients leave the clinical setting after scheduled programming. Some people are able to return to their own approved living environment. Others benefit from additional structure outside treatment hours and may stay in supportive recovery housing.
Bright Futures’ supportive residences are certified by the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR) and provide a substance-free environment where clients can maintain recovery-focused routines outside clinical hours.
Supportive housing is separate from inpatient or residential addiction treatment. PHP provides the clinical component of care, while recovery housing provides an environment that can support stability between treatment days. Availability and individual circumstances can affect placement, so admissions can explain current housing options before treatment begins.
PHP vs IOP and Outpatient Treatment
The amount of structure someone needs often changes during recovery. PHP provides the most intensive treatment within our outpatient continuum, while IOP and general outpatient care allow progressively greater independence.
PHP Intensive Outpatient (IOP) General Outpatient Highest outpatient structure Moderate structured support Lower-intensity ongoing care Several hours during the day, multiple days per week Group therapy 3–5 times weekly plus weekly individual therapy Group therapy 1–2 times weekly plus weekly individual therapy Home or supportive recovery housing outside treatment hours Greater independence outside scheduled treatment Primarily integrated with everyday life Intensive treatment outside 24-hour hospitalization Continued structured care or step-down from PHP Ongoing support with greater independence
When a lower level of structure becomes appropriate, clients can transition into Intensive Outpatient or general outpatient treatment. For eligible Florida residents who need a remote option at the IOP level, our Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program provides another way to continue structured care.
How Long Does PHP Last?
There is no single treatment timeline that works for everyone. PHP is generally used as an intensive, relatively short-term level of care, but the amount of time a client needs can depend on the severity of substance use, co-occurring mental health needs, previous treatment, stability outside clinical hours, and progress during the program. At Bright Futures, the length of PHP is individualized. Reaching an expected program timeframe does not automatically mean a client has to move into a lower level of care. When additional time in PHP would support recovery, treatment can be extended.
The same principle applies to stepping down. A transition into IOP or outpatient treatment takes place when greater independence and a lower level of clinical structure are appropriate, not simply because a certain number of days or weeks has passed.
Can You Work or Go to School During PHP?
Because PHP involves several hours of daytime treatment multiple days per week, clients may need to temporarily adjust work, school, or family responsibilities while participating. That level of commitment is part of what distinguishes PHP from less intensive outpatient programs. Trying to maintain a full outside schedule while also completing an intensive treatment program may not be realistic or helpful for everyone.
Before admission, our team can explain the current program schedule so clients can understand how treatment may affect their existing commitments.
What Happens After PHP?
When clients are ready for greater independence, treatment can continue through IOP and later general outpatient care. This gradual reduction in structure allows clients to take on more everyday responsibilities while maintaining access to therapy, accountability and recovery support.
As structured treatment becomes less intensive, planning can also include aftercare services, recovery meetings, and connection with the Bright Futures alumni community. These supports help clients prepare for the routines, responsibilities and challenges that continue beyond formal treatment.
Insurance and Paying for PHP
Insurance may cover some or all of PHP depending on the individual plan, medical necessity, authorization requirements, and recommended level of care.
Bright Futures currently works with many major insurance providers, including Aetna, Humana, TRICARE, AmeriHealth, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Oscar, UMR, AvMed, Optum and UnitedHealthcare. Coverage varies by policy, so having insurance through one of these providers does not guarantee that every service or length of treatment will be covered.
You can review insurance accepted at Bright Futures Treatment Center for more information about participating providers and the verification process. Our admissions team can also verify insurance benefits before treatment begins and explain any expected out-of-pocket costs or authorization requirements.
Bright Futures also provides information about FMLA, which is separate from insurance but may provide eligible employees with protected leave for qualifying treatment.
Starting PHP at Bright Futures
Not being sure whether you need PHP, IOP, or another level of care should not keep you from reaching out. The first step is an assessment of what kind of support is appropriate for your current needs. Our admissions team is available 24/7. The free pre-admission assessment generally takes 15 to 20 minutes and gives us an opportunity to discuss substance use, physical and mental health, previous treatment, and your current living situation. From there, we can discuss the appropriate level of care, insurance benefits, supportive housing when needed, and travel arrangements for clients coming to Boynton Beach from outside the area.

FAQs
Is PHP the same as inpatient rehab?
No. PHP provides intensive structured treatment during the day, but clients do not remain in a clinical facility 24 hours a day. Clients leave the treatment facility after scheduled programming and may return home or to supportive recovery housing.
Do I need detox before entering PHP?
Not everyone needs detox before PHP. Some clients may be medically and clinically appropriate to begin PHP directly, while others may require detoxification or a higher level of stabilization first. The admissions assessment helps determine the appropriate starting point.
How many hours a day is PHP?
Bright Futures provides several hours of structured daytime treatment multiple days per week. Because programming and individual treatment needs can vary, admissions can explain the current schedule before enrollment.
How long can I stay in PHP?
Treatment length is individualized. Clients can remain in PHP longer when additional time at this level of care is clinically beneficial rather than being required to step down solely because an expected program timeframe has ended.
Can I work while attending PHP?
PHP is an intensive daytime program, so some clients need to reduce or temporarily adjust work, school or other responsibilities. IOP, outpatient treatment or Virtual IOP can provide greater flexibility once a lower level of care becomes appropriate.
Where do I live while attending PHP?
Clients leave the clinical facility outside treatment hours. Depending on individual circumstances, they may return to their own approved living environment or use Bright Futures' FARR-certified supportive recovery housing.
Does insurance cover PHP?
Many insurance plans provide benefits for partial hospitalization when treatment is medically necessary, but coverage varies by policy. Bright Futures can verify benefits and explain authorization or out-of-pocket requirements before treatment begins.
Can I move from PHP into IOP?
Yes, when IOP becomes clinically appropriate. Clients may transition from PHP into IOP and later general outpatient treatment as they become ready for greater independence. If additional time in PHP is needed first, treatment can be extended.
